Abstract
IMPROVE CONTROL AND FASTER SWITCHING SPEEDS HAVE BECOME NECESSARY TO ACHIEVE ACCEPTABLE SYSTEM PERFORMANCE OF MILLIMETER WAVE PHASED ARRAY SYSTEMS. THE PROPOSED STUDY HAS THE OBJECTIVE OF APPLYING QUASIOPTICAL TECHNIQUES TO SOLVE THE TECHNOLOGICAL PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH DISCRETE CONTROL DEVICES. THE INTRODUCTION OF PIN DIODES INTO APPROPRIATELY DESIGNED METALLIC GRATINGS CAN BE EMPLOYED TO VARY AND CONTROL THE EFFECT OF THE GRATINGS ON THE ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVE IN SUCH A MANNER AS TO AFFECT BEAM STEERING. THE PROPOSED RESEARCH PROGRAM WILL EXAMINE THIS TECHNIQUE WITH A VIEW TO DEVELOP A MONOLITHIC APPROACH TO BEAM STEERING YIELDING THE DESIRED SYSTEM PERFORMANCE AND COST ADVANTAGES.
