Abstract
THE OBJECTIVE IS TO DEVELOP A SURVIVABLE, LIGHTWEIGHT HIGH ENERGY DENSITY ELECTROCHEMICAL ENERGY STORAGE DEVICE FOR SPACE APPLICATIONS. A NEW CLASS OF ELECTROLYTES, LOW TEMPERATURE MOLTEN SALTS (AND MODIFICATIONS THEREOF), OFFER THE OPPORTUNITY OF UTILIZING HIGH ENERGY DENSITY POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE ELECTRODES IN PREVIOUSLY UNTRIED COMBINATIONS. THE USE OF THESE LOW TEMPERATURE SYSTEMS OBVIATES SOME OF THE MATERIALS COMPATIBILITY PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH HIGHER ENERGETIC, LOW TEMPERATURE SYSTEMS.
