AbstractThe proposed program will focus on the development of a high performance, lightweight, high-voltage buck converter, which can be used in high power distribution systems where size and weight are a premium. The buck converter will be operated at cryogenic temperatures for increased performance. In Phase I, a small, low-voltage demonstration unit will be fabricated, and will demonstrate the overall system features of a low-temperature buck converter and associated devices. In addition, test data will be taken on high-voltage, solid-state switching devices and topologies, which are candidates for the high-voltage buck converter to be constructed in Phase II. The work capitalizes on the advances MTECH Laboratories has made in the field of cryogenic power electronics. The buck converter is intended for use in important, large-scale DOD electrical power systems, such as those planned for the US Navy's all-electric ship program.
