Abstract
PROPOSED ENGINEERING DEVELOPMENT STUDY FOR THE DESIGN OF A LOW-COST, ROBUST, DIGITAL MODEM CAPABLE OF SUPPORTING BURST AND CONTINUOUS TRANSMISSION MODES WITH EITHER BPSK OR QPSK MODULATION. PROGRAMMABLE RATE STRUCTURES UTILIZING DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING (DSP) WILL BE INVESTIGATED TO DETERMINE UPPER BOUND RATE LIMITATIONS GIVEN CURRENT STATE OF THE ART TECHNOLOGY. THE STUDY WILL CONSIST OF TWO MAJOR PORTIONS. PART ONE WILL CONSIST OF DESIGN TRADE-OFFS OF EACH PORTION OF THE MODULATOR AND DEMODULATOR SUBSYSTEMS WITH FOCUS ON DIGITAL FILTERING, PROGRAMMABILITY, SPECTRAL EFFICIENCY, LOWIMPLEMENTATION LOSS AND LOW PRODUCTION COSTS.
