Abstract"We propose to develop a component-based software framework for developing large-scale software and hardware/software systems based upon an innovative software architecture we originally developed for use in the modeling and simulation of complex systems.This architecture make use of the familiar concepts and terminology of systems engineering - systems, subsystems, inputs, outputs, and so forth - combined with the power and flexibility afforded by modern software technology. This allows us to give systemdevelopers the freedom they need to meet mission requirements, while keeping the framework relatively simple, easy to understand, and easy to use. One of the most innovative and useful features of the proposed framework would be a powerful integratedfacility for modeling and simulation; we expect this would prove invaluable throughout the entire system lifecycle, from initial requirements analysis and design all the way through deployment, operations, and maintenance. This integrated simulationfacility would be especially useful in developing large-scale hardware/software systems which must adapt to complex, changing environments. Anticipated benefits included reduced costs, more efficient use of personnel, and increased mission effectiveness.The proposed tool would provide a component-based software framework and development environment, easy to learn and easy to use, and yet powerful enough and robust enough for the most demanding
