Abstract
THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS RESEARCH IS THE CONVERSION OF THE DRUG INFORMATION SYSTEM OF THE NATIONAL CANCER INSTITUTE FROM A 36-BIT DIGITAL EQUIPMENT CORPORATION (DEC) 10 COMPUTER TO THE MORE COMMON 32-BIT COMPUTER ARCHITECTURE. THE FIRST PHASE OF THIS PROJECT IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF A PROGRAM THAT WOULD PERFORM MOST OF THE CONVERSION AUTOMATICALLY. THE PROGRAM CONVERSION AND VERIFICATION SYSTEM (CVS) IMPLEMENTS A HEURISTIC ALGORITHM WITH A RULE BASED STRUCTURE THAT WILL IDENTIFY AND MODIFY SECTIONS OF A FORTRAN PROGRAM THAT ARE DEPENDENT ON THE COMPUTER WORD LENGTH. THE PROGRAM WILL ALSO PERFORM A NUMBER OF CHECKS TO HELP VERIFY THE INTEGRITY OF THE RESULTING CODE.
