Abstract

This study describes development of real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging (rtfMRI) methods for treating pain and opioid misuse in chronic pain. This study is to Develop a Real-Time fMRI Feedback System that allows drug abusers to control their cravings and urges and/or increase their self control of their drug taking. Our group has demonstrated that rtfMRI training enables subjects to learn control over activation of anatomically-localized brain regions, leading to reductions in disease symptoms. We are now extending rtfMRI work from chronic pain and nicotine addiction to investigate opioid misuse in chronic pain. Decreasing pain and opioid misuse are the initial clinical targets.
