Swartz, Principal Investigator Mr. William J. Dawson, Business Official DOE Grant No. DE-FG02-97ER82443 Amount: $75,000 The development of large-scale power generation systems based on solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC), requires a less expensive materials approach in the fabrication of SOFC systems. The current process, called electrochemical vapor deposition, represents a major roadblock to full-scale commercialization of the technology due to its high cost. In this project, an alternative materials approach will be developed based on new technology for economically producing highly active ceramic powder dispersions. During Phase I, the feasibility of a low-cost fabrication approach will be demonstrated. This will entail producing active ceramic dispersions using nano-scale production technology. Processes will be developed for producing crack-free dense ceramic films on substrates currently used. In Phase II, the deposition process will be optimized and scaled up for performance evaluations. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The described technology is applicable to utility systems, which will provide a clean, low-cost source of power for residential and industrial applications. These power systems will operate on abundant or renewable fuels including natural gas, hydrogen, and biomass-derived fuels. Other uses for the technology include industrial gas generation systems and clean reactors for production of industrial hydrocarbons.
