Abstract
72676S03-I This project will develop a high-efficiency, low-cost, scalable spray deposition method for applying electrolyte and electrode layers to silicon oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). In Phase I, a number of SOFC cells will be spray coated and processed so that film quality, film thickness, and defect formation can be evaluated. Optimization studies will be performed in the laboratory to eliminate defect formation, evaluate costs, and determine scale-up potential. In Phase II, the aerosol spray coating and co-sintering approach will be evaluated for feasibility in the large scale manufacturing of SOFCs. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by awardee: The spray deposition process should have application in the industrial manufacturing of SOFCs for stationary and mobile applications.
