Abstract
This proposal is for the development of new Ho3+-doped germanate glass fiber laser at 2.09micron with output power of 50 watts and wall-plug efficiency of greater than 10%. This type of fiber laser can be used to generate multiple bands lasers for infrared countermeasure systems through optical parametric oscillators. We propose to use Ho3+ doped germanate glass fibers because silica glass fiber is not the ideal host for lasers at wavelength of 2 micron and longer. Germanate glass exhibits lower phonon energy compared to silica glass, increasing the quantum efficiency of 5I7 level of Ho3+ ions. This proposed all-fiber laser system can guarantee the ruggedness and reliable performance which is needed for helicopter platform.
