Abstract
Volumetric explosives offer unique advantages to the development of advanced munitions. They have high energy density, excellent coupling to targets, and potentially lower collateral damage compared with existing blast and fragmentation weapons. Under Phase I SBIR funding, NumerEx has developed a high fidelity modeling capability to simulate the evolution of volumetric explosives under a variety of environmental conditions. Using advanced initiation methods, NumerEx can control the volumetric explosion to provide defeat in a variety of complex battle spaces, such as urban close air support, mountainous regions, and biological agent defeat. This Phase II effort exploits these advances to develop a path toward novel compact munitions promoting persistent area dominance as well as a precision strike capability.
