Abstract
AN AIRBORNE IMAGING RADIOMETER IS NEEDED TO DETECT, MONITOR, AND QUANTITATIVELY ANALYZE GREENHOUSE GASES AND NATURAL GAS EMISSIONS. BY PROJECTING FALSE COLOR IMAGES (INDICATING NATURAL GAS CONCENTRATION) ONTO STANDARD VIDEO IMAGES OF THE OBSERVED TERRAIN, THIS RADIOMETER PINPOINTS THE LOCATION OF GAS EMISSION SOURCES, THE EXTENT OF GAS DISTRIBUTION THROUGH THE ATMOSPHERE, AND THE TOTAL EMITTED GAS QUANTITY. PHASE I OF THIS PROJECT INCLUDES MODELING OF THE OPTICAL RADIATION GENERATION, ITS PROPAGATION THROUGH THE ATMOSPHERE, AND ITS PROPAGATION THROUGH THE PROPOSED SENSOR COMPONENTS. THIS MODELING WILL BE USED TO SELECT AN OPTIMAL SENSOR DESIGN AND TO ESTIMATE SENSOR PERFORMANCE UNDER ACTUAL FIELD CONDITIONS. IN ADDITION, A PRELIMINARY PROTOTYPE SENSOR DESIGN WILL BE PERFORMED FOR PHASE II CONSTRUCTION AND FIELD TESTING.
