Abstract

REMOTE, RELIABLE ACCELEROMETERS SUITABLE FOR DEPLOYMENT ON THE OCEAN FLOOR ARE NEEDED FOR GEOPHYSICAL STUDIES. AN ALL-OPTICAL, REMOTE FIBER-OPTIC ACCELEROMETER SYSTEM THAT REQUIRES NO ELECTRICAL CONDUCTORS OR CONNECTIONS IN THE WATER IS BEING INVESTIGATED. THE ACCELEROMETER SYSTEM PROVIDES THE FOLLOWING SIGNIFICANT BENEFITS AND FEATURES: (1) BROAD-BAND RESPONSE (<0.1 HZ TO >100 HZ); (2) IMMUNITY TO EMI/EMP; (3) MINIMAL LEVELING REQUIRED (NO MOVING PARTS); (4) ROBUST (NO MOVING PARTS); (5) HIGH RELIABILITY (NO MOVING PARTS), NO IN-WATER ELECTRONICS; (6) LOW MAINTENANCE; (7) CAPABLE OF OPERATION IN ANY ORIENTATION; (8) NO ELECTRICAL CONDUCTORS/CONNECTIONS IN THE WATER; (9) WIDE DYNAMIC RANGE (100 DB); (10) NO ELECTRICAL POWER REQUIRED AT THE SENSOR; AND (11) LONG STANDOFF (>20 KM) DISTANCE.
