Abstract
OPTRA PROPOSES TO DEVELOP AN INNOVATIVE SET OF FIBER OPTIC SENSORS SUITABLE FOR USE IN MONITORING COMMERCIAL AIRCRAFT TURBINE ENGINES. THE SENSOR SYSTEM WILL UTILIZE A COMMON ELECTRO-OPTIC TRANSMITTER/RECEIVER/SIGNAL PROCESSOR (EO MODULE) AND FIBER OPTIC LINK. THREE DIFFERENT SENSOR HEADS WILL BE DEMONSTRATED WHICH WILL MEASURE ACOUSTIC ENVIRONMENT/PRESSURE, VIBRATION, AND TEMPERATURE. THE SENSOR HEADS WILL BE DESIGNED TO REPLACE EXISTING CONVENTIONAL SENSOR SYSTEMS WHICH ARE NOW INSTALLED ON COMMERCIAL AIRCRAFT. THESE NEW SENSORS WILL BE RUGGED AND EASY TO INSTALL. THE FIBER OPTIC DESIGN OFFERS IMMUNITY OT EMI, RF NOISE AND SURGES DUE TO NEAR-BY LIGHTNING STRIKES AS WELL AS A POTENTIAL WEIGHT REDUCTION.
