AbstractFuture weapons and electronics systems will have multiple components that generate large amounts of heat at intense heat fluxes. Advanced thermal management technology is needed to control the temperatures of these components. We propose to develop a highly stable two-phase thermal management system to meet these requirements. Our innovative system and component designs will effectively suppress flow instability in the system. The highly stable system will be very reliable and can absorb heat from multiple components very efficiently at intense heat fluxes. In Phase I, we will demonstrate the feasibility of the critical components, design the Phase II subscale system, and show by analysis and design that the flows in the system will be very stable at prototypical operating conditions. In Phase II, we will design, build, and demonstrate a highly stable two-phase thermal management system with multiple evaporators.
