Photon-X is proposing to develop an innovative dynamic 3D roof imaging system to monitor vehicle roof deformation during vehicle rollover testing. The 3D imaging system will capture real-time dynamic motion of the roof and vehicle occupants for playback analysis or modeling to enhance overall safety in rollover crashes. The system will provide photographic resolution 3D imagery with the ability to track the dot pattern on the vehicle roof in both time and 3D space. The Photon-X spatial phase 3D imaging system will provide an accurate, visible record of roof deformation. The feasibility of the system has already been demonstrated for measuring critical aircraft surfaces. Photon-X has created automated algorithms for the measuring critical surfaces in harsh real world environments. The Photon-X system is capable of capturing the dynamic motion of the roof as well as the motion of the crash dummies. The ability to capture both the roof and dummies in full 3D will allow for complex interactive modeling. The phase I proposed work will demonstrate the capability in a laboratory environment, and evaluate the design for its ability to operate in the 30G environment. Phase II can provide for a complete operational test.
