Abstract
THE PROPOSED RESEARCH IS DIRECTED TOWARDS IMPROVING THE EFFICIENCY OF THE CHLOR-ALKALI PROCESS BY PRODUCING HYDROGENCHLORIDE IN A COGENERATING FUEL CELL. HYDROGEN CHLORIDE IS USED TO ACIDIFY THE BRINE ANOLYTE USED IN THE PRODUCTION OF CHLORINE AND CAUSTIC SODA. BRINE ACIDIFICATION IS REQUIRED TO AVOID AN UNDESIRED PARASITIC ANODE REACTION. THE HYDROGEN CHLORIDE USED FOR BRINE ACIDIFICATION IS EITHER PURCHASED OR PRODUCED BY BURNING THE CHLORINE AND HYDROGEN BY-PRODUCT FROM THE CHLOR-ALKALI PROCESS. BY PRODUCING THE HYDROGEN CHLORIDE IN A COGENERATING CUEL CELL, THE NEGATIVE FREE ENERGY CHANGE OF THE REACTION IS RECOVERED AS DC ELECTRIC POWER RATHER THAN LOST AS WASTE HEAT.
