AbstractThe Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Eglin AFB requires high temporal rate data from dynamic experiments in their effort to move to physics model from empirical based models. High resolution image data for fragment/target material dynamics and characterization is a key technology area that will facilitate this move but suitable illumination for use with high speed digital devices do not exist. Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI) proposes to develop a high intensity illumination systems based on using a repetitively pulsed laser as the light source to fill this deficiency and meet the specific requirements of the solicitation. This Phase I program will address the high risk aspects of associated with developing a pulsed illumination system based on the repetitive Q-switching of a Nd:YAG laser which meets the requirements of the AFRL. Proof of principle experiments will be performed during this program and analysis will be conducted for the application of the device to high speed imaging. A Phase II contract award will result in a system being built and delivered to the AFRL where tests will be conducted to demonstrate the systems with digital camera and/or holographic cameras at the Advanced Warhead Evaluation facility or Ballistic Experiment Facility at Eglin AFB, FL.
