Abstract
THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS PHASE I RESEARCH IS TO DETERMINE THE FEASIBILITY OF UTILIZING ACOUSTIC RADIATION FROM VEHICLE TIRES TO PROVIDE A LOW COST, EASY TO DEPLOY, UNOBTRUSIVE, RELAIBLE REPLACEMENT FOR THE CURRENT METHOD OF COLLECTING VEHICLE AXLE PASSAGE DATA. THE PROPOSED METHOD WILL CROSS-CORRELATE THE TIRE NOISE RECEIVED AT SPATIALLY SEPARATED MICROPHONES TO LOCATE AXLE CROSSINGS. THE PROCESSING WILL GENERATE TIME TAGGED PULSES TO INDICATE AXLE PASSAGES. THE LOCATION OF THE PULSE RELATIVE TO A BASELINE PARALLEL TO THE ROADWAY WILL BE PROVIDED. THE OUTPUTS WILL BE EQUIVALENT TO THOSE CURRENTLY PROVIDED BY TAPE SWITCHES.
