Abstract
In phase I, Powdermet Inc. developed and demonstrated the CVD FB process for the productionof nano-engineered thermal spray powders, while Catepillar demonstrated the use of the coatedpowders for creating functionally thermal spray coatings. The current functionally gradedsystem consists of a multi-layer coating with a porous alumina layer, an alumina/mullite graded layer and a cermet wear resistant layer at the surface. In the proposed Phase II, thefunctionally graded system willl be optimized and coating performance and characterization for specific Army and commercial applications. These coatings are designed to provide enhancedengine life and performance by reducing heat load to the cooling system and increasing enginelife in heavy use conditions.
