AbstractThis Phase II SBIR project will refine manufacturing processes to produce high strength, lightweight, low cost energy adsorbing integral composite armor and complete design configuration optimization for combined ballistic and blast performance. Powdermet has developed a product line of unique, high strength and modulus lightweight syntactic metallic microcomposites that were shown in Phase I to be capable of compltely adsorbing fragment energies at NIJ level III/IV at less than 1/2 the areal density of steel. Design trade-offs between ceramic tile ballistic performance, syntactic microcomposite density and strength, and inegral armor design and integration variations will be analtically and experimentally optimized.
