AbstractNetwork Centric Warfare (NCW) is being implemented through a concept known as "FORCEnet," that will tremendously extend the capabilities of individual platforms or systems by expanding the knowledge base, extending sensor and weapon reach, and enabling forces to quickly react through decentralized control. But NCW has also placed new, more stringent requirements for precision data and time synchronization as the kill chain decision-making system is becoming more and more time-compressed. The merging of legacy infrastructure with COTS systems presents challenges for time-correlated data capture as well. The need for precise time and data synchronization is not limited to this application. As automated systems become more capable, the data rates and interconnectivity require more accurate and more precise time coordination. The iNet concept, where legacy test and measurement telemetry links are replaced by a Telemetry Network System (TmNS) has the same data synchronization challenges. Industrial automation, telecommunications, and Residential Ethernet have all begun the adoption of a network-based information paradigm, and all have adopted IEEE 1588 as the mechanism to provide accurate time synchronization. Our Phase I effort focused on this solution, the use cases, and the level of maturity of 1588 devices.
