Abstract

Significant detection performance can be achieved in submarine SONAR systems through the development of larger acoustic sensor arrays. For years SONAR sensor array improvements have focused on increasing the number of sensor channels. Programs such as WAA, Flank Array, CAVES, and LVAA have focused on increased channel counts but have all had limited success based upon produce ability due to the associated installation costs and technologies required to support the cabling, mounting and hull penetrations required to support the 1000+ channel arrays. Often the impacts to shipyard installation associated with these arrays have driven the production of such arrays to be cost prohibitive. One near term example of such costs is the inability to provide radius of curvature sensors to support the AN/WLY-1(V)3 and AI&R technology insertion (TI-06) initiatives for the backfit submarines. Progeny Systems proposes development of non-penetrating sensor telemetry for the submarine using Ultrasonic Remodulation Telemetry System (URTS) technologies. Our ultrasonic approach represents an innovative solution applicable to any single acoustic SONAR sensor in use today. Further our innovative telemetry design will also support the installation of multi-channel acoustic arrays or other digital interfaces
