Abstract
WE PROPOSE TO DEVELOP A DYNAMIC IMPACT TESTER THAT WILL SIMULATE THE PEAK IMPULSE LOADS DEVELOPED IN SABOT/MODEL ASSEMBLIES TO BE USED IN A LARGE LIGHT GAS GUN. THE PHASE I WORK WILL INCLUDE SMALL-SCALE TESTING OF IMPACT LOADING USING AN EXISTING 380-MPA (60,000-PSI) HYDRAULIC PULSE GENERATOR. ANALYTIC MODELING OF THE TESTER AND IMPACT DYNAMICS WILL RESULT IN A DESIGN FOR A RELIABLE MODEL TESTER CAPABLE OF SIMULATING LOADS IN 63.5-MM (2.5-IN.) DIAMETER MODELS.
