Abstract
APL IS A POWERFUL, HIGH-LEVEL, COMPACT COMPUTER LANGUAGE FORTHE MANIPULATION OF NUMERIC OR CHARACTER DATA. THERE IS, HOWEVER, A LACK OF APL STATISTICAL FUNCTIONS FOR USE BY DATAANALYSTS AND OTHERS WHO USE OR DEVELOP STATISTICAL METHODS. QUANTECH PROPOSES TO DEVELOP A LIBRARY OF APL FUNCTIONS TO HELP FILL THIS GAP. THE SYSTEM WILL PROVIDE BOTH THE CASUALAND SOPHISTICATED USER WITH A COLLECTION OF ROUTINES SIMILARTO THE FORTRAN IMSL PACKAGE. IN PHASE I, QUANTECH WILL CHOOSE SEVERAL ROUTINES, DEFINE A CONSISTENT FORMAT FOR USERACCESS TO THE COLLECTION, AND CREATE THE APPROPRIATE STANDARDS OF TESTING AND DOCUMENTATION. RESEARCHERS WILL WRITE AND DEMONSTRATE A PROTOTYPE SYSTEM CONTAINING FUNCTIONS TO GENERATE UNIFORM AND NORMAL RANDOM SAMPLES, PERFORM NUMERICAL QUADRATURE, AND PERFORM FLEXIBLE DATA SMOOTHING AND SEVERAL OTHER BASIC COMPUTATIONAL TASKS. THE CHOSEN ALGORITHMS WILL SATISFY HIGH STANDARDS OF NUMERICAL PRECISION AND USE ROBUST, EFFICIENT APL CODE. IN PHASE II, QUANTECH WILL ADD NEW ROUTINES, GIVING THE USER A GENEROUS AND EASILY ACCESSIBLE TOOLKIT. THE ROUTINES WILL BE CAREFULLY DOCUMENTED BOTH FOR THE PROGRAMMER AND THE ANALYST.
