AbstractFilm has long been the standard medium for recording data (images) from optical and electron microscopes. Contemporary computer and electronic technology provide non-film based means for capturing, storing and accessing images thereby providing for more effective use of image data, better accessibility to archived data, and better integration with computer-based analysis and reporting programs while, reducing costs and toxic waste production. To promote the use of non-film based media, a practical Image and Data Management System is required. In Phase I we will work with one or more commercial analytical laboratories and DOD Components which make extensive use of film to generate a set of image management requirements. Based on these requirements, one or more systems will be designed and critical subsystems will be prototyped and demonstrated to illustrate key concepts. Appropriate designs will be recommended for implementation in Phase II. RJ Lee Group is well-suited to perform this work based on its extensive experience in commercial use of film and non-film based microscope images and in management of non-film based images and associated data. RJ Lee Group has developed and sells software applications for management of digital image data.
