Abstract

For long-range active interrogation of Special Nuclear Materials, an intense beam of mono-energetic directed gamma rays is required. In Phase I of this project, RadiaBeam developed the design for such a source, based on Inverse Compton Scattering (ICS), and determined its feasibility. The key innovation in our source is a novel Interaction Region system design, which significantly increases the average flux and stability of the ICS system, compared to the state-of-the-art. In the proposed Phase II project, RadiaBeam will fabricate and test the Interaction Region system at an existing facility with a high-energy electron beam and laser. The result of a successful Phase II project will be a Proof of Concept experimental demonstration of our key innovations to enhance the ICS system performance, which would significantly reduce the risk involved in further development of such a system for long-range active interrogation.
