Abstract
THE LONG-TERM OBJECTIVES OF THIS PROJECT ARE TO DEVELOP A A BODY OF KNOWLEDGE CONCERNING CHARACTERISTICS OF OF MONOCHROMATIC X-RAYS AND TO APPLY THESE PHENOMENA TO VARIOUS AREAS OF MEDICAL DIAGNOSIS. BONE MINERAL SCANNING IN A FASHION SIMILAR TO INSTRUMENTS USING GD-153 WILL BE ACCOMPLISHED USING A MODIFIED X-RAY GENERATOR AND AN OPTIMIZED MONOCHROMATOR IN CONJUNCTION WITH A MOVING TABLE. VARIOUS DETECTION SYSTEMS WILL BE EVALUATED FOR EFFECTIVENESS AND COST. SPECTRUM AND IMAGE PROCESSING WILL BE ACCOMPLISHED WITH AN IBM PC/AT OR EQUIVALENT. INCREASED SPEED, HIGHER PRECISION, AND ACCURACY WITH SIMILAR OR REDUCED RADIATION DOSE ARE EXPECTED. A CONSTANT STATISTICS TYPE SCAN WILL BE ATTEMPTED FOR COMPARISON WITH THE TYPE NOWPRODUCED. IN ADDITION TO ENABLING A SUPERIOR BONE MINERAL ANALYSIS TECHNOLOGY, SOME OTHER SIGNIFICANT BENEFITS THAT MAY BE DERIVED FROM THIS INNOVATION ARE: PATIENT DOSE REDUCTION; GENERATION OF QUANTITATIVE RADIOGRAPHS; ENHANCED QUANTITATION CAPABILITIES FOR SOFT TISSUE SMALL DENSITY DIFFERENCES AND THE SOFT/HARD TISSUE INTERFACES IN CT IMAGING; REDUCTION OF CONTRAST MEDIA QUANTITIES USED; IMPROVED POTENTIAL FOR FUTURE SUCCESSFUL DEVELOPMENT OF DIGITAL RADIOGRAPHY; AND IMPROVED DIAGNOSIS THROUGH MORE EFFICIENT USE OF K-EDGE ABSORPTION PHENOMENA.
