Abstract
Surfaces of military vehicles and equipment contaminated with chemical warfare (CW) or biological warfare (BW) agents must be rapidly decontaminated to allow continued operations. Unfortunately, all current decon technologies have significant disadvantages. The most readily available system, the M100 kit, uses a solid sorbent that is inconvenient to apply, that absorbs but does not detoxify CW agents, and that is ineffective against BW agents. Liquid systems are readily applied, but currently have drawbacks in performance and stability during storage and transport. In Phase I, TDA Research, Inc. and our partners developed a liquid decon system that is active against CW and BW agents, easily used, compact and highly transportable, has a long shelf life, and operates with minimal environmental impact, producing no hazardous residue. In Phase II TDA proposes to complete system development. Our goal is to produce a fielded system in the shortest possible time. We have therefore selected a proven platform compatible with U.S. military operations. We will investigate formulations to increase the operating temperature range, prepare prototypes and conduct laboratory and field tests. With test and analysis data, we will apply for all regulatory approvals necessary to produce, store, transport, use and dispose of the decon unit.
