Abstract
THE PROPOSED PROJECT FOCUSES ON THE PRELIMINARY DESIGN OF THE NEXT GENERATION OF HYDROLOGICAL DATA MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS. THE ISSUES TO BE ADDRESSED INCLUDE: DESIGNING FLEXIBLE, PARALLEL USER INTERFACES, DEVISING MACHINE INDEPENDENT SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT SPECIFICATION, INCORPORATING AND IMPROVING THE CURRENT STATE-OF-THE-ART OF THE GRAPHICAL DISPLAY OF SPATIALLY AND TEMPORALLY DISTRIBUTED DATA, DEVELOPING PORTABLE APPLICATION SOFTWARE INTERFACES TO DATABASE MANAGEMENT KERNELS, AND SPECIFICATION OF MINIMUM TARGET HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS. THIS RESEARCH CONTRIBUTES TO A MAJOR CHALLENGE FACING TODAY'S DEVELOPERS OF COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY: THE DEVELOPMENT OF METHODS TO TURN LARGE VOLUMES OF COMPUTER DATA INTO USEFUL INFORMATION.
