Abstract
RPR's Phase I contract proved the feasibility of concrete recycling based o a shock-producing hammer/anvil concept for fracturing and sizing aggregate and separating reinforcing steel into marketable scrap. The Phase II project will develop a portable self-propelled prototype to remove and process a 12 foot wide roadway at a rate of about a mile a day. This is called "Fast Track" highway removal and recycling because it's accomplished in one continuous process by a single machine. It will incorporate componenets necessary for the durability and maneuverability required in a mobile operating environment. This state-of-the-aret technology will revolutionize highway rehabilitation and become the industry standard due to its techical, economical, and environmental advantages. Concrete recyclers will cost only one-quarter the amount of existing jaw crushers, and will pay for themselves within 2 years with the savings and revenues generated. Both the concrete and steel materials will be up to 90% reusable and saleable. Concrete highway rehabilitation will become at least 33% more cost-effective due to a reduced need for capital, labor, and time - making it cost-competitve with asphalt removal and replacement. Urban highway rehabilitation, in particular, will be more cost-effective because the pavement sub-base, utilities, and nearby buildings won't be disturbed. Concrete recycling also solves the problem of high concrete disposal costs and lack of landfill availability. Additional environmental benefits include less noise and air pollution.
