Abstract
THE PROJECT WILL DOCUMENT AND REVIEW THE ADEQUACY OF EXISTING TRAINING AND RECERTIFICATION PROGRAMS FOR DRIVERS IN SELECTED OHDS CLIENT GROUPS, INCLUDING THE ELDERLY, AND THOSE WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES AND MILD MENTAL HANDICAPS. THE INADEQUACIES OF EXISTING PROGRAMS WILL BE ESTABLISHED THROUGH A REVIEW OF EXISTING PROGRAMS AND BASED ON DISCUSSIONS WITH DRIVERS, NATIONAL CONSTITUENCY GROUPS, INSURANCE COMPANIES, POLICE ORGANIZATIONS, AND OTHER DRIVER EDUCATION PROGRAMS. SPECIFICATIONS WILL BE DEVELOPED FOR A DRIVER EDUCATION PROGRAM WHICH WILL RESULT IN THESE DRIVERS BEING CERTIFIED FOR LONGER PERIODS. THE COMMERCIAL AVAILABILITY OF THIS DRIVER EDUCATION PROGRAM WILL ENABLE OLDER AMERICANS AND OTHER OHDS CLIENT DRIVERS TO CONTINUE TO PROVIDE THEIR OWN TRANSPORTATION LONGER THROUGH THE USE OF PRIVATE AUTOMOBILES.
