Abstract
Individuals who are of short stature face impediments when driving automobiles due to their inability to effectively operate vehicle controls, to clearly see the external roadway environment, and to properly use the vehicle restraint system. These impediments could be largely removed if a device could be developed to elevate the driver to a sitting position similar to that afforded to average height drivers. The proposed aftermarket supplemental system is compliant with the FMVSS crash safety standards and can be affixed to can be easily installed by the driver in a matter of minutes, dispensing with the need for third-party installation. The seat can also be used by drivers of all heights with minimal effort, is cost affordable to most individuals, eliminates chaffing of the installed restraint, and offers a suite of ergonomic features designed specifically for the intended user population. In summary, this device enhances the driver's ability to operate a motor vehicle, increases occupant safety, and greatly enhances driving comfort - all of which will increase the safety of our roads for short-stature drivers, other motorists and pedestrians.
