Abstract
A NEW PROCESS CALLED THE NELSON FILTER SYSTEMIS CURRENTLY UNDER DEVELOPMENT. THE NELSON FILTER SYSTEM IS AN ADVANCED DRY SCRUBBING SYSTEM THAT REMOVES SIMULTANEOUSLY BOTH SO2 AND NOX FROM FLUE GASES. IT IS VERY EFFECTIVE, HAVING DEMON-STRATED REPEATEDLY IN LABORATORY TESTS 99.9% SO2 AND OVER 90% NO2 REMOVAL. IT IS ENVIRONMENTALLY ATTRACTIVE IN THAT NO SLUDGE OR TROUBLESOME WASTES ARE PRODUCED. IT IS SIMPLE AND LOW COST. THE KEY TO THE FILTER SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT IS AN NEW HYPER- REACTIVE ABSORBENT, A MATERIAL THAT IS REGENERABLE SIMPLY BY HEATING TO 500 - 600 DEGREES C. THE ABSORBENT, IN THE FORM OF A FILTER BED PLACED INSIDE THE FLUE GAS DUCT, CAP- TURES SULFUR AND NITROGEN OXIDES AT TEMPERATURES OF 200 DE- GREES C. OR LESS. WHEN THE ABSORBENT BECOMES SATURATED, IT IS REGENERATED. THE GOAL OF THE PROPOSED PHASE I RESEARCH IS TO GAIN A BETTER UNDERSTANDIN OF THE REGENERABILITY OF THIS UNIQUE NEWABSORBENT. IN PARTICULAR, IT IS DESIRABLE TO KNOW HOW CHANGES IN REGENERATION VARIABLES, SUCH AS TEMPERATURE AND ENVIRONMENT, AFFECT THE REQUIRED REGENERATION TIME, THE COM-POSITION OF THE EXITING GAS, AND ABSORBENT EFFICIENCIES, ANDHOW MULTIPLE REGENERATIONS AFFECT AN ABSORBENT'S STRUCTURE AND ITS ABILITY TO CAPTURE SO2 AND NOX.
