AbstractSatCon Technology Corporation proposes to design, fabricate, and demonstrate a quiet, compact, variable speed, electric propulsion system with four magnetic signatures to be used in small mobile underwater vehicles. The goal of this program is to develop a propulsion system concept having minimal electromagnetic and acoustic noise characteristics for use in any special operations maritime environment. The proposed system will combine new developments in motor technology and electrical drive technologies. The heart of the propulsion system is the motor and its variable frequency drive. SatCon selected a Permanent Magnet, brushless motor coupled with Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) drive a the preliminary baseline. SatCon believes this combination can provide a efficient, compact, high starting torque motor with low magnetic signature due to an increased number of poles. In addition, mu-metal shielding of the motor will provide further attenuation of any emitted magnetic field. Phase I will consist of concept definition, initial investigation, and detailed planning for Phase II. Phase II will consist of design, fabrication, and testing of the prototype hardware concept.
