AbstractThe proposed program represents a thorough identification and analysis of all the factors that define an airborne system for determination of slant range. The combined experience in military, industrial, scientific, medical, and commercial laser capabilities of the Schwartz Electro-Optics team (SEO) brings together a group that can analyze every aspect of the system from laser components to airborne system requirements to develop the most effective in performance and lowest in cost type system for the program. More than 800 man-years of laser experience can be brought together in a cohesive effort to define all the parameters, develop a model of the total system, and then do the trade-off studies of all viable alternatives. From this will come a definitive to design and specification for the airborne slant range system. The SEO team is most capable in conversion of military products and R&D into commercial products. A proven record of accomplishments in successful translation of SBIR efforts into complete commercial business operations - such as the Autosense traffic system has been demonstrated by SEO's Sensors Division. The Model 1-2-3 laser in the Medical and Solid State Laser Division, and the Tri-Lase for tattoo removal in the Medical Division are examples of ability to convert R&D into commercial markets. In summary, SEO offers an unusual opportunity to develop the best low-cost slant range laser rangefinder for the U.S. Air Force but also to open doors into commercial markets for the low-cost systems.
