Abstract
70089S02-II Recent predictions have indicated that a higher energy neutron beam would be much more effective in treating brain tumors via Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT). Therefore, this project will design, develop, integrate, and test advanced, compact neutron sources with neutron energy spectra that are highly optimized for BNCT. In particular, a compact, high voltage, high power neutron-tube driver will be delivered to Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) to power their advanced neutron tube. Phase I developed and tested critical power electronics hardware to verify component scalability to the high voltage, high power levels required by the LBNL neutron tube. Test results showed that the power supply technology can meet neutron tube driver requirements. The data was used to estimate the electrical performance and package size of the neutron driver to be developed in Phase II. Phase II will develop the compact, high voltage neutron tube driver needed to power the advanced neutron tube. The neutron tube driver will be designed, fabricated, and tested, and then integrated with the LBNL advanced neutron tube for further testing. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by awardee: The technology should result in a high-energy-neutron source, tailored for maximum efficacy of BNCT. This technology also can be used in Homeland Defense for counterterrorism/counterdrug applications for detecting explosives, nuclear materials, and illicit drugs.
