AbstractThe firm proposes to design, develop, and test an ER (electrorheological) fluid shock dampening device in this program. The device is targeted for a near-term application to the Navy shipboard equipment specifically, shock isolators and gun recoil damping. The innovations of the proposed program are: 1) a synergistic approach to the ER fluid research in which device and fluidwill be developed coincidentally; 2) a highly efficient damper maximizing the ER fluid performance in shear mode; and 3) an optimal control strategy to minimize power consumption while maximizing performance.
