Abstract
DIFFERENCE FREQUENCY MIXING USING DIODE LASERS AS PUMP AND SIGNAL SOURCES PROMISES TO PROVIDE A CHEAP, COMPACT ROOM-TEMPERATURE SOURCE OF MID-IR RADIATION FOR INSTRUMENTS BASED ON IR ABSORPTION. HOWEVER, HIGH POWER TUNABLE SPECTROSCOPIC-QUALITY DIODE LASERS REQUIRED FOR DFM ARE CURRENTLY LACKING. SDL PROPOSES A HIGH POWER TUNABLE LASER THAT PROVIDES OVER ONE WATT OF CW DIFFRACTION-LIMITED SINGLE-SPATIAL-MODE SINGLE-LONGITUDINAL-MODE POWER, CONTINUOUS TUNABILITY, AND NARROW LINEWIDTH, ALL IN A SMALL, ROBUST PACKAGE. THE PROPOSED LASER ALSO OFFERS A MODULAR DESIGN AND INTERCHANGEABLE GAIN ELEMENTS THAT GIVES HUNDREDS OF NM OF TUNABILITY FROM A SINGLE PACKAGE USING A PROPRIETARY HIGH POWER GAIN ELEMENT AND A UNIQUE EXTERNAL CAVITY. IN PHASE I, SDL WILL ASSEMBLE A PROTOTYPE AND DEMONSTRATE SINGLE-MODE HIGH POWER OPERATION. IN PHASE 2, SDL WILL FABRICATE AN ENGINEERING MODEL WITH BROAD CONTINUOUS TUNABILITY AND LONG-TERM STABILITY. IN PHASE 3, SDL WILL BRING THE LASER TO MARKET.
