FRP Smart Composite Pipe System
Phone: (850) 386-9197
The proposed research develops an innovative solution for a new SMART pipe system utilizing high-density polyethylene/fiber reinforced polymer (HDPE/FRP) composite system. The new pipe system utilizes a combination of three interacting materials: FFRP, HDPE, and concrete and is equipped with wireless sensors to provide mentoring capabilities during operations. The proposed system is suitable for new or replacement of existing gas and oil pipes and presents several key advantages over existing technology: 1) it is cured-in-lace, which allows for convenient transportation; 2) the composite interaction between concrete, HDPE, and FRP allows for an economical system that combines the best properties of each material; 3) adaptability in design based on strength requirements can be achieved by controlling the wall thickness and the type of materials used, for example, hoop strength and longitudinal strength can be easily achieved and adjusted by changing the strength and density of fabric fibers; 4) the chemically inert HDPE tube has excellent flow properties, high abrasion resistance and durability, 5) remote multi-event monitoring capability, which would provide early detection for small leaks, large leaks, structural impact, damage initiation and propagation. The resulting pipe system has great strength, stiffness, rigidity and durability insuring superior performance and long service life.
