Abstract
A FORCE/STRAIN SENSOR CONSISTING OF CARBON FIBERS EMBEDDED IN ASPHALT, CONCRETE AND OTHER CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS WILL BE USED AS A PERMANENT VEHICLE AXLE AND TRAFFIC SENSOR ON ROADWAYS. FOR TEMPORARY INSTALLATION, A PAINT OR ASPHALT STRIP WITH CARBON FIBERS IS APPLIED TO THE ROADWAY IN THE FORM OF STRIPS. THIS WILL BE DEVELOPED DURING PHASE I. A SIGNAL CONDITIONER/PROCESSOR PROVIDES AXLE WEIGHT AND VEHICLE SPEEDS AS WELL AS AXLE DETECTION AND COUNT FOR MULTIPLE LANES.
