Abstract
Final design and assembly of a test rig capable of providing experimental data on thick MLI systems is proposed. The test rig is capable of direct measurement of heat flux through MLI blankets, as well as seams and penetration configurations, withoutrelying on boil-off measurement. Complete control of key test variables has the potential to provide wide-ranging data for a variety of cryogenic insulation configurations. MLI samples with 160 to 300 layers will be tested at liquid hydrogen temperaturesusing both conventional and advanced spacer materials. Test data acquired will be used to validate the fundamental layer-by-layer design and simulation code created during Phase I. Necessary improvements will be made to the code to correct any simulationinaccuracies. This flexible code permits rapid simulation of thick MLI concepts and can be readily enhanced with additional modeling capabilities.
