Abstract

Fabricating a multilayer optical coating for laser reflection is an expensive and complicated process. The accuracy and reproducibility of coating thickness and quality is major technical challenge. In order to extend the life and the durability of anoptical coating it is necessary to address the design and production of a superior quality multilayer. This proposal addresses an innovative process for vacuum depositing multilayer organic structure in a very precise and consistent manner. Technologyproposed for this program will play a key role in improving the performance, durability, and cost for optical coatings. Commercial applications include improved optical components for laser based drilling and cutting industries, low cost, large areaoptical coatings for solar reflectors, and high performance ultra-narrow notch transmission coatings (Rugate filters).
