Abstract
A SUPER MICRO PROCESSOR BUILT AROUND OFF THE SHELF PC/AT COMPONENTS IS PROPOSED AS A PROCESSING NODE FOR TABS-3. THE SUPERMICRO IS CAPABLE OF PROCESSING POWER ONE ORDER OF MAGNITUDE LESS THAN A CRAY1. THE ENGINE THAT GIVES THE PC/AT THE POWER IS A VECTOR/SCALER ENGINE CALLED THE VORTEX. THIS SUPERMICRO IS CAPABLE OF 20MFLOPS IN 32 BITS AND 13MFLOPS IN 64 BITS. APPLICATION SOFTWARE IS ACCOMMODATED BY A VECTORIZING PREPROCESSOR THAT PRODUCES VECTORIZED FORTRAN CODE FOR USE BY THE VORTEX.
