Abstract
THE CAPTURE OF DESIGN KNOWLEDGE IS CURRENTLY A PAPER AND HUMAN INTENSIVE PROCESS. IT OFFERS LITTLE OR NO AUTOMATED ASSISTANCE TO THE DEVELOPER. THIS PROPOSAL DESCRIBES AN APPROACH TO DEVELOPING A SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT DESIGN KNOWLEDGE SERVER. THIS SERVER FUNCTIONS AS A PERSISTENT OBJECT BASE, RETAINING NOT ONLY THE PRODUCTS OF A DEVELOPMENT EFFORT, SUCH AS THE DOCUMENTATION, REPORTS, AND CODE, BUT ALSO THE RATIONALE BEHIND THE DECISIONS WITHIN THE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS AND THE DOMAIN KNOWLEDGE THAT SUPPORTS THE DECISION. THIS PROVIDES A CONTINUUM OF KNOWLEDGE AS REASONING THAT MAY BE UTILIZED BY SUBSEQUENT DEVELOPERS, MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL, AND MANAGEMENT.
