Research Institution

A miniature, middle wavelength infrared (MWIR) camera is proposed for remote imaging from an F-16 test aircraft flying at 50,000 feet. The camera will be custom designed to fit inside the viewing pod of the aircraft, which will be flying at speeds approaching Mach 2. The camera will use a two-dimensional detector array sensitive in the 2 - 5 micron band. The detector will be cooled with a miniature cooler to improve the performance of the camera. Two optical systems, one with a large FOV and the other with high spatial resolution, will be provided with the camera system. A multi-chip electronics module will be developed for the camera to minimize its footprint and to reduce future production costs.
