Abstract
THE PHASE I PROGRAM WILL INVESTIGATE THE CREATION OF AN ELECTRICALLY CONDUCTIVE SURFACE LAYER ON SEVERAL TYPES OF NONCONDUCTIVE POLYMER SHEET. THE CONDUCTIVITY WILL BE MEASURED AND CORRELATED TO ION IMPLANTATION PARAMETERS SUCH AS ION SPECIES, DOSE, AND ENERGY. ANY CHANGES OR IMPROVEMENTS IN THE MECHANICAL, CHEMICAL, OR OPTICAL PROPERTIES AS A RESULT OF ION IMPLANTATION WILL ALSO BE INVESTIGATED. ADDITIONALLY, THE PROGRAM WILL ASSESS THE FEASIBILITY OF TREATING LARGE AREAS OF PRODUCTION QUANTITIESOF POLYMERIC SHEET USING PRESENT ION IMPLANTATION EQUIPMENT.THE SUCCESSFUL PHASE I PROGRAM WILL DELINEATE SPECIFIC ION BEAM FORMULATIONS FOR CREATING CONTROLLED CONDUCTIVITY ON SEVERAL COMMONLY USED POLYMERS. THE USE OF CONDUCTIVE POLYMERIC SHEETING HAS SEVERAL APPLICATIONS IN THE DESIGN OFHIGH ENERGY PARTICLE DETECTORS. THE ABILITY TO CREATE A SURFACE LAYER OF KNOWN RESISTIVITY (CONDUCTIVITY) ON A HIGHLY RESISTIVE POLYMER OR COMPOSITE SHEET IS VERY DESIRABLE.
