Abstract
MONITORING CRITICAL COMPONENTS IS A MAJOR ISSUE IN MAINTAINING OPERATIONAL READINESS AND SAFETY IN NUCLEAR REACTORS. BECAUSE OF THE HIGHLY RADIOACTIVE ENVIRONMENT INHABITED BY MANY OF THESE CRITICAL COMPONENTS, PERIODIC INSPECTIONS ARE DANGEROUS AND COSTLY. AN ACCURATE METHOD OFPERFORMING REMOTE INSPECTIONS IS THEREFORE NEEDED. THIS PROJECT ADDRESSES THESE MONITORING NEEDS WITH SURFACE LAYER ACTIVATION (SLA). ORIGINALLY DEVELOPED TO MEASURE ABLATION OF MISSILE NOSE CONES DURING RE-ENTRY, SLA USES RADIONUCLIDES PRODUCED BY PARTICLE ACCELERATOR BOMBARDMENT AS SURFACE MARKERS. THE LOSS OF ACTIVITY, REMOTELY MEASUREDBY A GAMMA RAY DETECTION SYSTEM, IS USED TO DEDUCE THE AMOUNT OF SURFACE MATERIAL REMOVED WHILE ACTIVITY, REMOTELY MEASURED BY A GAMMA RAY DETECTION SYSTEM, IS USED TO DEDUCE THE AMOUNT OF SURFACE MATERIAL REMOVED WHILE OPERATING IN REAL TIME. SLA IS IDEAL FOR NON- INTRUSIVE MEASUREMENT OF MICROMETER-SCALE WEAR IN OPERATING MECHANICAL SYSTEMS AND HAS MANY SUCCESSFUL APPLICATIONS IN AUTOMOTIVE AND DIESEL ENGINES, POWERPLANT SYSTEMS, AND GAS TURBINES. THIS RESEARCH WILL ADAPT SLA TO COMMON MATERIALS FOR CHECK VALVESAND OTHER WEAR- OR CORROSION-PRONE REACTOR COMPONENTS, CALIBRATE THE ACTIVITY/DEPTH PROFILE, AND DEMONSTRATE FEASIBILITY OF PERFORMING ON-LINE MEASUREMENTS IN THE "HIGH BACKGROUND" ENVIRONMENT OF A REACTOR.
