Abstract
RECENT ADVANCES IN SOLAR CELL TECHNOLOGY HAVE GREATLY INCREASED THE SENSITIVITY ACHIEVABLE IN THE ULTRAVIOLET (UV) REGION. THIS PROJECT ADAPTS THIS TECHNOLOGY TO THE DETECTION OF LIGHT FROM THOSE FAST UV SCINTILLATING MATERIALS SUCH AS BAF2 THAT ARE NOW USED WITH PHOTOMULTIPLIER TUBES FOR LIGHT DETECTION. PHASE I WILL STUDY THE RELEVANT PROPERTIES OF DIODES MADE FROM VARIOUS MATERIALS INCLUDING SILICON, GALLIUM ARSENIDE, AND INDIUM PHOSPHIDE. SIMPLE P-N, P-I-N, AND AVALANCHE STRUCTURES WILLBE CONSIDERED. THE QUANTUM EFFICIENCY IN THE WAVELENGTH RANGE OF INTEREST, LEAKAGE CURRENT DENSITY, CAPACITANCE, SPEED OF RESPONSE, AND RADIATION RESISTANCE WILL BE MEASURED OR INFERRED FROM KNOWN DATA. THE MOST FAVORABLE DEVICE AND STRUCTURE, IN TERMS OF EXPECTED PERFORMANCE AND COST, WILL BE SELECTED FOR DEVELOPMENT IN PHASE II.
