Abstract
ULTRA-SMALL, NON-DESTRUCTIVE FIBER OPTIC CHEMICAL PROBES (OPTRODES) WILL BE DEVELOPED FOR NUTRIENT FLUX STUDIES. T THESE PROBES WILL BE USED FOR THE IN SITU MEASUREMENT OF THE PRIMARY PLANT NUTRIENTS IN SOILS, SYNTHETIC ROOTING MEDIA AND IN-PLANT VASCULAR SYSTEMS TO STUDY THE FLUX DYNAMICS. THE OPTRODES ARE FLUORESCENT CHEMICAL SENSORS CAPABLE OF GIVING BOTH SPATIAL AND TEMPORAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE CHEMICAL SPECIES PRESENT. THE OPTRODES ARE USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH A SPECIAL LASER FLUORIMETER. THE PHASE IEFFORT FOCUSES ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF A 100 PM O.D. POTASSIUMPROBE TO BE USED FOR PROOF OF PRINCIPAL. PRELIMINARY 3- DIMENSIONAL MEASUREMENTS OF POTASSIUM BEHAVIOR IN SOILS AND SYNTHETIC MEDIA WILL BE MADE.
